{"id":1616,"date":"2026-01-20T14:24:58","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T19:24:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbcstudents\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=1616"},"modified":"2026-01-20T14:30:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T19:30:20","slug":"guidelines-on-the-recording-of-lectures-or-other-instructional-activities","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.bccampus.ca\/unbcstudents\/chapter\/guidelines-on-the-recording-of-lectures-or-other-instructional-activities\/","title":{"raw":"Guidelines on the recording of lectures or other instructional activities","rendered":"Guidelines on the recording of lectures or other instructional activities"},"content":{"raw":"<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">As of January 2026, UNBC does not have a formal policy governing the <span class=\"markn3wj9kkta\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">recording<\/span>\u00a0of lectures or other instructional activities.<\/span>In the absence of an approved policy, interim guidance has been discussed with the UNBC Faculty Association as part of UNBC's shared commitment to collegial governance and to working collaboratively toward the development of a clear, comprehensive policy framework.\r\n\r\nThese discussions recognize the importance of balancing academic freedom, intellectual property considerations, privacy, and effective teaching and learning practices.\r\n\r\nAs this work continues, the following general principles are being applied on an interim basis:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Students who access the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unbc.ca\/access-resource-centre\/student-rights-and-responsibilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Access Resource Centre (ARC)<\/a> may request the right to audio record the lectures, but there is an agreement signed between the student and ARC, and the instructor is informed about this agreement and the associated constraints.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In all other situations, the audio or video <span class=\"markn3wj9kkta\" style=\"font-size: 1em\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">recording<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em\">\u00a0of instructors and fellow students without consent is not consistent with the principle of academic integrity (sect 1.4 <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unbc.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/sections\/policy\/academic-and-non-academic-conduct-policy_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic and Non-academic conduct policy<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1em\"><span style=\"font-size: 1em\">). If students wish to record lectures or other instructional activities, they should discuss and receive the consent of the instructor prior to class or the activity.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>If <span class=\"markn3wj9kkta\" style=\"font-size: 1em\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">recording<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em\">\u00a0is permitted, it is only to be used for the purposes of private study by the individual student.
