First, I want to assure you that academic English is nobody\u2019s first language<\/strong>. You might be arriving here already speaking a handful of languages, but feeling uncertain and insecure about your ability to carry out nuanced and engaged scholarly writing in English. Or, English might be your first language, but you\u2019re not sure what\u2019s required of you in terms of [pb_glossary id=\"1401\"]tone [\/pb_glossary] and level of formality in this new genre.\r\n\r\nLearning how to write in a scholarly context is a process<\/strong>. But the good news is that we get better at writing by writing.\r\n\r\nI also want to acknowledge that scholarly writing as a genre situated within academic institutions is inherently colonial and exclusionary. Historically, Indigenous Traditional Knowledge has been actively fenced out of the conversation. It is our responsibility, as students and as scholars, to educate ourselves about the histories and contemporary realities of First Peoples, and to actively<\/em> contribute to the important work of [pb_glossary id=\"86\"]reconciliation[\/pb_glossary] and [pb_glossary id=\"83\"]decolonization[\/pb_glossary].\r\n\r\nThis textbook was created at the University of British Columbia, on the traditional and unceded territory of the x\u02b7m\u0259\u03b8k\u02b7\u0259y\u0313\u0259m (Musqueam) people<\/a>.
