Introduction

Neonatal jandice phototherapy.
Neonatal jaundice phototherapy. Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and of the whites of the eyes (sclera) due to too much bilirubin in the blood. Newborns are prone to developing jaundice, because their bilirubin removal is slow (increased bilirubin levels are from the breakdown of RBC from bruising and injury during birth).

Learning Objectives

After studying this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Explain the normal physiological role and functions of liver
  • Outline the transport of bile and state three main functions of bile.
  • Outline the normal transportation, processing and elimination of bilirubin.

The liver is an organ only found in vertebrates which detoxifies various metabolites, synthesizes proteins and produces biochemicals necessary for digestion. Its other roles in metabolism include the regulation of fuel supply (e.g., glycogen storage), decomposition of red blood cells and the production of hormones.
