  • Explain the normal physiological role and functions of liver
  • Outline the transport of bile and state three main functions of bile.
  • Outline the normal transportation, processing and elimination of bilirubin.
  • Explain the utility of 10 common clinical tests associated with liver function (e.g., what information does it provide? when might the test result be abnormal?):
    • serum (total) bilirubin
    • serum unconjugated bilirubin
    • urobilinogen
    • aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
    • alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
    • alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
    • gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)
    • prothrombin time
    • international normalized ration (INR)
    • reticulocyte count
  • Briefly describe the causes, pathophysiology and symptoms of the following common disorders and how they relate to jandice (pre-hepatic, hepatic, post-hepatic subtypes):
    • hemolytic anemia,
    • Gilbert syndrome,
    • Dubin-Johnson syndrome,
    • hepatitis,
    • cirrhosis,
    • post-hepatic obstruction
