4 Project: Acculturation

The goal of this assignment is to do a comprehensive research both academic and applied, on the acculturation and settlement challenges of a Canadian immigrant group.  Choose a language group which has settled in your  city.  This is a group project so you will work with 2-3 other students.

Example:

  • Spanish (Mexico or other Spanish speaking countries)
  • Korean
  • Main land Chinese (Mandarin speaking)
  • Arabic speaking (Middle Eastern Countries)
  • Tagalog (Filipino)
  • Somali
  • Vietnamese
  • Punjabi

Your tasks include Research, PowerPoint Group presentation

  1. Research There are two parts to your research: Academic and Applied research
    1. Academic Research (Peer reviewed journal articles )
      • Review and summary of the research articles on acculturation process of the target group
      • Select 3-5 scholarly articles from peer reviewed journals (Choose Canadian studies when available).
      • The articles must be from within the last 10 years. )
      • Research review should include at least three of the topics relevant to the group you have selected: health, acculturation, interpersonal relations, cultural identity, cultural dimensions, linguistic issues/challenges faced by the target group while learning English. (This may be found in the linguistic journals).
    2. Applied  Research (Community, Media)
        • Provide the demographic data about the target group from Stats Canada. How many in Canada?  How many in BC? How many in your city; e.g., Surrey.  How many men, women, age group families etc.
        • A brief history of migration of this group to Canada. Why has this group come to Canada to settle? What is the political, social, economic history of the target group?
        • Interview at least two members of the target group; e.g., the first generation and a second generation member to understand how the acculturation process has occurred. Or a man and a woman from the target group to examine if there are gender differences in the acculturation process.
          (Use the interview consent form posted on the course site, and provide a signed copy)
        • What services are available for the target group in your city? Visit the locations and/or websites of the service agencies that offer help to new immigrants. Collect their brochures, information for immigrants etc.
        • What local/community efforts are being made to help the newcomers from the target group settle and acculturate? Often the ethnic groups, families, religious places offer this support, so you may consider checking this source.
        • How the local community is receiving them? Check the media reports.
        • Clips from the media; newspaper, magazines, TV, social media on the issue of acculturation of the target immigrant group. Is this favorable? Does it indicate prejudice?
  1. Class Presentation
    • Power Point presentation as a team
    • Source of the information (e.g., website) and the scholarly references when discussing a research article, must be in APA style cited at the bottom of the slide
    • Additionally, a List of References in APA style must be provided in the final slide
    • Make sure to divide the tasks for the team in a fair manner. Put this in writing so there is clarity as to who is expected to do what

Criteria for grading Class presentation

  • Organization of the content, points flow in a logical order
  • Clarity of points
  • Interesting, lively, engaging (not reading off every word from the powerpint file, or from a piece of paper or from the cellphone screen)
  • APA style is followed in the reference citation. No presentation will receive “A” grade if the APA style is not followed
  • Stimulates questions/comments from class
  • Every team member contributes to the oral presentation equally
  • Separate grades for the team and the individual
