Employing good RDM practices can help you improve organization and efficiency in data handling.
Establishing and documenting these good RDM practices can make the following more efficient:
- Finding and organizing your files
- Tracking different versions of your data
- Organizing and compiling information on your project (e.g., for reporting purposes)
- Reproducing your work
- Passing your work on to another researcher
- Communicating with other research team members or supervisors
- Training new staff
- Managing who has responsibilities for your data
- Sharing your data
- Satisfying grant, journal, and research ethics board requirements
RDM can also support increased visibility and recognition for your work with data. You can plan for a data set to be preserved and made accessible (if appropriate) in a repository, and for that data to be citable. Data deposit can contribute to open scholarship by making data re-use possible, and it can also contribute to increased trust in research by making studies more replicable.
