50 Administrative Safeguards

Previous Lesson

Lesson 4 of 18

Administrative safeguards are policies, rules, protocols or guidance about securing data from unauthorized access.

Such safeguards may involve the classification of data to determine what level of safeguards are required. As you create a data management plan you want to consider what sources of administrative safeguards (e.g., your institution, a research collaborator or partner) could apply to you and how you ensure you adhere to them in your protocols for handling data. Be aware of any requirements your research partners may have. If you have arranged a data sharing or access agreement, it may also require data to be handled and stored in particular ways.

In addition to official policy, your institution may have recommended services and storage options available to you.
