76 Citing a Data Set

Previous Lesson

Lesson 12 of 16

When you are writing, check the style guide to which you are adhering (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, Vancouver) for how data sets should be cited.

DataCite, a nonprofit organization that provides persistent identifiers, also provides data citation guidelines.

READ GUIDELINES

Data citations should include:

  • The data set creator
  • Publication date
  • Title
  • Publisher (repository name)
  • Persistent identifier (e.g., DOI) or URL
  • Version
    • Note that some data sets may have version numbers. It’s important to cite the version of the data you have used if there is one.
  • Date accessed (this may be optional in some citation styles)
