25 Community and Other Research Partners

Previous Lesson

Lesson 7 of 11

If you have a research partner, as is often the case in community-based research or when working with an industry partner, roles of each party should be considered.

You may need to negotiate a data use or data sharing agreement as a part of this process. Such agreements are typically done in consultation with your research services office and/or legal department at your institution. Such agreements can impact whether your data is considered sensitive, for example, and whether you are required to keep the data confidential or shared only with your industry partner.

You may also need to consider how to transfer data between yourself and your partners and whether any additional training on ethics and handling of sensitive research data is needed for yourself or your partners. In some cases, the data needs to be transferred to the research partner at the end of the project.
