82 Create a Data Management Plan

Previous Lesson

Lesson 2 of 4

The last activity for this course is for you to apply what you have learned to create a DMP for your own project.

If you do not currently have a project, you can still explore the tools discussed in this section and consider how you might use them in future work.

The Digital Research Alliance of Canada provides a platform that can be used to create DMPs called DMP Assistant. They have also created templates and exemplar DMPs to assist researchers.

The following video, created by the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, provides an overview of the platform and how to use it to create a DMP:

Once you create an account, you can use DMP Assistant to create, share, and manage DMPs. Note that if your institution has set up their own administrative space within DMP Assistant, you will see their logo once you set your institutional affiliation. Your institution may also have customized or created their own templates and guidance within the platform.

The image below shows what DMP Assistant looks like if you set your affiliation as Athabasca University.

There are many different templates in DMP Assistant. If you want to review the templates before selecting one, you can view them as PDFs.

REVIEW TEMPLATES

There are also exemplar DMPs you can review. They include sample answers and guidance.

REVIEW EXAMPLARS

Once you have created a DMP, you can share it with collaborators or your supervisor. You can use the platform to comment on and and collaboratively create a DMP with other team members as well. The following video provides a brief overview of some of the features in DMP Assistant for managing your DMPs.

DMP Assistant has a request feedback feature that can be set up by your institution. If it is enabled you will see a request feedback tab (pictured below).

When enabled, you can use this feature to ask that someone at your institution review your DMP and provide advice. Your institution’s library or research office may also provide other support.
