54 Technical Safeguards

Previous Lesson

Lesson 8 of 18

Technical safeguards are the technologies used to ensure the security of your data.

Your institution may offer training that familiarizes you with best practices for basic cybersecurity (e.g., using strong passwords, firewalls, encryption, secure data transfer). Athabasca University students can access cybersecurity training offered by IT.

This section covers some technical safeguards you can put in place to protect your data including: strong passwords and encryption, appropriate storage options, appropriate software and computing tools, backups, methods for secure data transfer and appropriate file permissions, considerations for working remotely, and how to destroy data.

It is a good idea to consult with your local IT or research computing department to find out about options available to you through your institution for both data storage and other research software tools.
