Case 1: Scenario Briefing and Pre-Learning

Work through this chapter to prepare for the virtual case-based scenario. The estimated time to complete this section is varied depending on the knowledge students have prior to engaging in the scenario. Completing all activities in their entirety may take up to 2 hours.

Scenario Briefing

Use the following client information to guide your preparation.

  • NAME: Lee Jung
  • AGE: 78 Years Old  
  • SEX: Male
  • PAST MEDICAL HISTORY: Cardiac disease, Atrial Fibrillation, HTN
  • MEDICATIONS AT HOME: Digoxin
  • SOCIAL HISTORY: An active senior participating in community and social gatherings.

Lee is a 78-year-old man who lives in his own home. He has a 5-year history of atrial fibrillation and hypertension and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last year. He also has expressed feeling anxious at times.

He regularly attends a Healthy Heart Adult Day Program for older adults.

You are a student nurse at the program and are helping to lead a session on heart health.

Prerequisite Knowledge

For this case, it is anticipated that you would have basic competence in the following areas:

Psychomotor Skills

  • Basic vital signs assessment (adult)
  • Basic head-to-toe assessment (adult)

Cognitive Skills

  • Anxiety, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation hypertension
  • SBAR communication
  • Medication administration and pharmacology (digoxin)

  • Therapeutic communication with a client
