In this section, we have provided you with links to general resources you may have learned throughout your pharmacy school journey. This is not an exhaustive list, but rather, a list with the most common and useful resources to add to your repertoire.

BC Children’s Hospital

What is it used for? Online resource to determine appropriate dosing for neonatal and pediatric patients
Type of Resource? Resource for dosing
Accessibility Free online resource
What is included? Drug dosing for both pediatric and neonatal patient. Within each drug monograph, you will find the following information:

  1. Dosing based on disease/conditions
  2. Dosage forms available
  3. Tips for preparation of medication (if applicable)
Student Bottom Line If you have a neonatal or pediatric patient, we recommend using this resource to determine the most appropriate dosing for your patient as it is very simply to use and was created by Pharmacy staff at BC Children’s Hospital.

Student Bottom Line As this is one of the most diverse resources available in pharmacy practice, we recommend this resource as a place to become familiar with conditions/drug therapies. It is best practice, however, to cross reference information and use condition specific resources when possible.

Student Bottom Line This database is organized by specialty and provides a very comprehensive overview of many different conditions. As this resource has an evidence based practice approach, we recommend this resource for many of your pharmacy inquiries.

What is it used for? A detailed resource used by many clinicians to become familiar with commonly used drugs. This resource is used for dosing, determining safety in different patient populations, compatibility with other drugs and general facts about the medication.

Student Bottom Line Lexicomp is a very diverse resource with many different indexes and clinical tools avaliable making it a student favourite. It is important to keep in mind this is an American resource so ensure you cross reference dosing with a Canadian resource.

Martindale

What is it used for? International drug reference
Type of Resource? Online database (paper resource available)
What is included?
  1. Drug nomenclature
  2. Indications
  3. Common names
  4. Pharmacokinetics
Student Bottom Line A great resource for inquiries regarding available drug therapies. The paper based resource is organized into two volumes; volume A include information regarding kinetics, interactions etc and volume B has information regarding drug preparations available. The paper based resource is often confusing to use and thus we recommend using the index as much as possible.

Trissel’s IV Drug Compatability

What is it used for? Determines compatibility of IV drugs
Type of Resource? Compatibility tool
What is included? This resource provides information regarding the compatibility of certain drugs in solutions and at the Y site. A summary of the studies are also provided.
Student Bottom Line For drug related question regarding IV drug compatibility, this is the preferred resource to use.

 

Natural Medicines

What is it used for? Resource with evidence on efficacy and safety of different natural medicines.
Type of Resource? NHP Resource
Accessibility Available through UBC Library
What is included?
  1. Effectiveness/ Safety data
  2. Interaction checker with prescribed medications
Student Bottom Line When patients ask questions about different NHP products, this is the recommended resource to determine efficacy/ safety behind its use. We also would recommend using this resource to assess if interactions are present between your patient prescription and non prescription items. This resource has a significant amount of information so CTRL F will be your friend.

What is it used for?Provides a summary of management of various conditions and evidence behind treatment options.

What is included? This resource is organized by body system and each conditions includes the following information:

    • Summary of conditions
    • Dosing
    • Summary of trials
    • Pricing of drugs
Student Bottom Line RxFiles is one of the preferred resources at UBC as it summarizes conditions and treatments very well. This resource does require an online subscription and the hard copy can be purchased online.

Type of Resource? Online database
Accessibility Available through UBCs Pharmacy Program
What is included?
  1. Overview of conditions (pathophysiology, diagnosis etc.)

Student Bottom Line This is a great tool to become familiar with the most up to date evidence available to healthcare professionals. It is important to keep in mind this is an American resource so ensure to cross reference dosing with a Canadian resource.
