Course Assessment
More detailed information about these course components is provided below.
Please note:
- The Final Exam is required and must be passed to pass the course. If you do not pass the exam, your final exam score will serve as your final mark. Please note that to take the final exam you will need to be able to use Proctorio – an online invigilation program. https://proctorio.com/support
- If late, all assignments are subject to a 10% per day penalty.
- Use of Turnitin: In this course you will be required to submit your assignments in electronic form; certain assignments will be submitted through a service to which UBC subscribes, called Turnitin. This service checks textual material for originality. Please note, you will be able to submit work to Turnitin, access the originality report produced and re-submit your work as long as submission deadline has not passed. More information will be provided for specific assignments where the service is used.
About Course Grade
In order to earn a passing Course Grade, students must:
- Earn a passing grade in the Course Overall
- Earn a mark of at least 50% in the Final Exam
This means if you fail the Final Exam (less than 50%), you fail the course. In this case, if you passed the course overall but fail the Final Exam, you will receive the mark you scored on your Final Exam as your course grade. If you fail the course overall and you fail the Individual Final Exam, you will receive the lower of these two scores as your course grade.
The relationship between Course Grade and letter grade is defined by UBC Grading Practices https://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/courses/grades
We do not give extra make-up work, so please maintain strong study activities during the term to help maximize the grade you earn. Keep up with the readings and assignments. Form study groups with fellow students. Read the ‘Study Habits’ PDF , this will help you to ensure that you are using efficient and effective study habits which will give you your best opportunity to excel in this class as well as in your other studies at UBC.
Quizzes (10%)
There will be 5 graded quizzes for this course, which will be available for two days at the end of each module. Quizzes are intended to help you stay on track with the course content and assess your progress associated with the module and course learning objectives. The quizzes typically target goals which are module-level in nature, though you may be asked to integrate your understanding across modules.
Quizzes are released on the Friday of the Module at 12:00 PM (noon). The quiz remains open until Sunday 11:59 PM PST (Vancouver time). Quizzes should be taken within a two hour, continuous time period. Although it may be possible to start a quiz and return later to finish, I will deduct points if the quiz is not finished within two hours of your start time.
For your final grade, I will use the top four of 5 scores. A zero will be assigned for any quiz you do not take. Please note that I typically draw some of the Final Exam questions from the Quizzes.

Assignments
Assignments target goals that are course-level in nature, and ask you to integrate your understanding across a whole module or modules. There are two type graded assignments:
Assignment 1: Geo-News Analysis (20%)
This assignment will be submitted and peer reviewed through the ComPAIR tool in Canvas. All students will be responsible for researching and sharing Geology and Resource related news events with the class, summarized from two or more articles, rewritten into your own words which your own critical analysis of the event. These will be shared and peer-reviewed using UBC’s ComPAIR facility. Grades are obtained from the quality of your submission and completion of peer- and self-review.
Assignment 2: Geo-Resources in My Majors Project (30%)
All students will research and create a final project showing the links between geology and geological resources, to the topics they are studying for their major’s degrees. The format of this project will be flexible to allow for your own creativity, e.g. report, poster, presentation or UBC Wiki etc. The first step is to submit a project title and proposal, including the format of your project, which must be approved before you proceed.
