Creating Front and Back Matter

Creating Front and Back Matter

Front matter comprises the first section of a book, and is usually the smallest section in terms of the number of pages.

Typical front matter sections in open textbooks are:

  • Acknowledgements
  • Disclaimer
  • Foreword
  • Introduction
  • List of Abbreviations
  • Licensing Info

The most common types of back matter for open textbooks are:

  • Appendices
  • Bibliography
  • Glossary
  • Version history
