Smart switches are a new type of switch that can connect to a wireless network and thus be controlled remotely as well as locally. Their switching style could be any of the arrangements previously discussed.
Because smart switches are electric loads themselves, they need an independent connection to the grounded neutral conductor of a circuit. It is for this reason that the Canadian Electrical Code now mandates that an identified conductor be installed at each location of automatic or manual control devices for permanently installed luminaires.
