Lab 6 Activity

Overview

For Lab 6 you will identify the 8 metamorphic rock samples in your lab kit based on observations of their texture and composition. The samples include the following metamorphic rocks:

Metamorphic Rock Sample List
Anthracite Gneiss Marble Quartzite
Garnet schist Hornfels Phyllite Slate

Samples to Use for Lab 6

Use the samples with “RMe” in the sample number. They are numbered 420RMe through 490RMe. You will also need the Lab 6 worksheet that came with your lab materials.

What to Do Next

Use the Lab 6 worksheet (Figure 5.13) to record your observations and guide you through the identification process for each metamorphic rock in your set.

Refer to Figure 5.14 to help you match your observations with a name. Note that Figure 5.14 includes rocks that are not in your set.
