Chapter 1 – Script and Pronunciation

Unit 5 — Constructing Syllables

Overview

In this unit, you will learn how Nepali consonants combine with vowel signs to form syllable blocks called akṣara. This practice is known as bāhrakharī, and it is one of the foundational steps in learning to read and write devanāgarī.

The idea is simple:

You take one consonant (for example क ka) and combine it with all vowel sounds by adding vowel signs (mātrā). This produces a full set of syllables such as:

क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, कृ, के, कै, को, कौ

Each of these is read as a single akṣara (one syllable unit).

Through bāhrakhari practice, you learn:

  • how vowel signs attach to consonants
  • how vowel sounds change while the consonant stays constant
  • how most Nepali words are constructed from syllable blocks

Building Nepali Syllable Blocks

In Nepali, reading is based on akṣara units, not individual letters.

Each akṣara is read as one complete sound unit.

Core patterns

  1. A consonant with inherent vowel:
  • क = ka
  1. Consonant + vowel sign:
  • का =
  • कि = ki
  • कृ = kṛ
  1. Consonant cluster + vowel:
  • क्रो = kro
  1. Consonant without vowel (halanta):
  • क् = k

Key idea

An akṣara always contains only one vowel element, even if multiple consonants are present.

Bāhrakhari Pattern

Bāhrakhari is a structured syllable grid showing how one consonant combines with all vowels.

You read horizontally across each row, keeping the consonant constant and changing only the vowel.

Important observation

  • Some vowel signs appear before the consonant (ि i)
  • Some appear after, above, or below
  • The visual position does not change the reading order

Key idea

Written position ≠ pronunciation order
You still read: consonant → vowel

Table 1.5.1 - The क-वर्ग (ka group)

The क-वर्ग (ka group) letters are क, ख, ग, घ, ङ. Practise one row at a time.

kagroup
अं अः
क् का कि की कु कू कृ के कै को कौ कं कः
ख् खा खि खी खु खू खृ खे खै खो खौ खं खः
ग् गा गि गी गु गू गृ गे गै गो गौ गं गः
घ् घा घि घी घु घू घृ घे घै घो घौ घं घः
ङ् ङा ङि ङी ङु ङू ङृ ङे ङै ङो ङौ ङं ङः

Table 1.5.2 - The च-वर्ग (ca group)

The च-वर्ग (ca group) letters are च, छ, ज, झ, ञ. Watch for the left-written vowel sign ि in forms like चि, छि.

ca group
अं अः
च् चा चि ची चु चू चृ चे चै चो चौ चं चः
छ् छा छि छी छु छू छृ छे छै छो छौ छं छः
ज् जा जि जी जु जू जृ जे जै जो जौ जं जः
झ् झा झि झी झु झू झृ झे झै झो झौ झं झः
ञ् ञा ञि ञी ञु ञू ञृ ञे ञै ञो ञौ ञं ञः

Table 1.5.3 - ट-वर्ग (ṭa group)

The ट-वर्ग (ṭa group) letters are ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण. These are a separate series from dentals (त-वर्ग), so keep the sets distinct while practising.

ṭa group

The त-वर्ग (ta group) letters are त, थ, द, ध, न. These are common in everyday words, so this set is worth extra practice.

ta group
त् ता ति ती तु तू तृ ते तै तो तौ तं तः
थ् था थि थी थु थू थृ थे थै थो थौ थं थः
द् दा दि दी दु दू दृ दे दै दो दौ दं दः
ध् धा धि धी धु धू धृ धे धै धो धौ धं धः
न् ना नि नी नु नू नृ ने नै नो नौ नं नः

Table 1.5.5. - प-वर्ग (pa group)

The प-वर्ग (pa group) letters are प, फ, ब, भ, म. Notice how the below vowel signs appear clearly in forms like पु/पू/मृ.

pa group
अं अः
प् पा पि पी पु पू पृ पे पै पो पौ पं पः
फ् फा फि फी फु फू फृ फे फै फो फौ फं फः
ब् बा बि बी बु बू बृ बे बै बो बौ बं बः
भ् भा भि भी भु भू भृ भे भै भो भौ भं भः
म् मा मि मी मु मू मृ मे मै मो मौ मं मः

Table 1.5.6 - य, र, ल, व

These letters (य, र, ल, व) combine with vowel signs in the same way as the earlier groups. Pay attention to रु/रू, where the below vowel sign tucks under the shape.

य, र, ल, व
अं अः
य् या यि यी यु यू यृ ये यै यो यौ यं यः
र् रा रि री रु रू रृ रे रै रो रौ रं रः
ल् ला लि ली लु लू लृ ले लै लो लौ लं लः
व् वा वि वी वु वू वृ वे वै वो वौ वं वः

Table 1.5.7 - श, ष, स, ह

This set includes श, ष, स, ह. Practise them slowly—some learners confuse श/ष/स at first, but the vowel-sign pattern is the same.

श, ष, स, ह
अं अः
श् शा शि शी शु शू शृ शे शै शो शौ शं शः
ष् षा षि षी षु षू षृ षे षै षो षौ षं षः
स् सा सि सी सु सू सृ से सै सो सौ सं सः
ह् हा हि ही हु हू हृ हे है हो हौ हं हः

Table 1.5.8 - Common Conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ)

These are common consonant clusters written as single combined forms

Self Reflection

Key Takeaways

  • An akṣara is one syllable block in Nepali writing
  • Each consonant carries an inherent vowel a
  • Vowel signs (mātrā) modify consonants to create new syllables
  • The halant removes the vowel and produces a bare consonant
  • Bāhrakhari is a systematic way to master consonant–vowel combinations
  • Reading fluency comes from recognizing whole akṣara units, not individual letters
