Where is the Nearest Bank?

A visitor asks for the nearest bank. A local gives short, clear directions using an easy landmark (the cafe).

Speaker Nepali Transliteration
Visitor नमस्ते। माफ गर्नुहोस्… नजिकको बैंक कता छ? namaste. māph garnuhos… najikko baiṅk katā cha?
Local नमस्ते। बैंक टाढा छैन। namaste. baiṅk ṭāḍhā chaina.
Visitor म त्यहाँ कसरी जान सक्छु? ma tyahā̃ kasarī jāna sakchu?
Local यो बाटो सिधा जानुहोस्। दोस्रो चोकमा दायाँ मोड्नुहोस्। बैंक क्याफेको छेउमा छ। yo bāṭo sidhā jānuhos. dosro cokmā dāyā̃ moḍnuhos. baiṅk kyāpheko cheumā cha.
Visitor त्यहाँ पुग्न कति समय लाग्छ? tyahā̃ pugna kati samaya lāgcha?
Local करिब दस मिनेट जति लाग्छ। karib das mineṭ jati lāgcha.
Visitor धेरै धेरै धन्यवाद! dherai dherai dhanyawād!
Local केही छैन। kehi chaina.

Instructions
  • Work in pairs.
  • Student A asks for directions.
  • Student B gives directions.
  • Use the map. Start at “You are here.” North is up.
  • Switch roles and repeat with a new destination.

B: sidhā jānuhos. tyaspachi Pine Street-mā dāyā̃ moḍnuhos. skul dāyā̃paṭṭi cha.
A: Pine Street-mā dāyā̃, hoina?
