アイヌの人々は、海や川に近くて、食べ物飲み物が手に入りやすい所に建てた集まったはアイヌ語で「コタン」と言って、それぞれのコタンの名前には意味がある。

コタンの名前には、「ぺッ」、「ナイ」、「ポロ」という言葉が多く見られる。「ベッ」は大きい川、「ナイ」は小さい川、そして「ポロ」は大きいという意味だ。アイヌの人たちは何百年もの間、海や川でマレクという道具を使って、魚をとったり、山で植物ったり、動物狩りをしたりして、生活していた。また、それぞれのコタンが魚や動物をとる所をきめていて、ほかのコタンの所からは、とってはいけなかった。

はアイヌ語で「チセ」という。チセの中心には、家をあたためたり食べ物料理したりするための囲炉裏があった。アイヌにとって、火は神様で、アイヌ語でアペフチカムイと言う。そして、チセには、に出入りするためのもあった。

チセは、それぞれの地方にある木やを使って建てられた。例えば、屋根には、アシやススキ、ササ、キハダ、カバなどの木のを使った。

チセには、人が住むための建物だけでなくて、作物を取っておくためのや、トイレ、子熊オリなど、別の建物もあった。
