男性は、動物の狩り、特に熊と鹿の狩りと魚釣りをするのが仕事とされた。

また、儀式を行うのは男の人の役割だ。

狩りをしない時には、よく木で家の道具などを作って、それにきれいな模様を彫った。

 

女性は、季節の植物を採ったり、畑をしたり、男性が狩りでとってきた動物や魚の肉を保存したりするのが仕事だった。

日常生活の炊事、子供たちと年寄りの世話、着る物や織物の手作りなどもあって、毎日仕事で忙しかった。

アイヌの女性は昔から、入れ墨を入れるという伝統をもっていた。アイヌの女性は、結婚する年齢になってから、入れ墨を入れた。特に、悪魔が体に入らないように、口の周りに入れ墨をした。そのため、1871年に日本政府が入れ墨を禁止したとき、多くの女性は悲しんで、抵抗した人もいた。
