Video Accessibility Best Practices
To create accessible video content, ensure you:
- Plan and write a script.
- Record with a dedicated microphone in a quiet environment.
- Consider visual elements, such as:
- Record in 720p or higher resolution;
- Be aware of shadows and lighting;
- Use uncluttered backgrounds and avoid animated virtual backgrounds;
- Close excess tabs and silence notifications when screen recording;
- Share accessible material and avoid flashing content.
- Add captions and provide transcripts.
- Start with machine-generated and edit.
- Review BCcampus Accessibility Bites: Supporting Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing for more information.
Audio Description
Audio descriptions—a.k.a. video description, described video, or visual description—is an audio narration of visual elements, action, and information in visual media (film, television, theatrical production) for the benefit of blind and low vision consumers. Consider the video below as a brief example of audio descriptions in a video.
