Chapter 4 – Ownership and Belongings

Unit 1 — Key Vocabulary

In this unit, you will learn common Nepali words for belongings and ownership. You will practise using कस्को (kasko) “whose,” मेरो (mero) “my,” and तपाईंको (tapāī̃ko) “your” to ask and answer simple questions about objects.

Study the words below first. Read each Nepali word, look at the transliteration, and practise saying it aloud. Use the English meaning to check your understanding.

Possessive Words

These words help you talk about ownership. In this chapter, you will use them to say who an object belongs to.

Nepali Transliteration English

तपाईंको tapāī̃ko your
शिक्षकको śikṣakko teacher’s
साथीको sāthīko friend’s
कस्को kasko whose?

Practice

Look around your room or classroom. Choose five objects and ask who they belong to. Then answer using मेरो (mero) “my,” तपाईंको (tapāī̃ko) “your,” or another person’s name.

Example:

यो कस्को किताब हो?
yo kasko kitāb ho?
Whose book is this?

यो मेरो किताब हो।
yo mero kitāb ho.
This is my book.

त्यो कस्को झोला हो?
tyo kasko jholā ho?
Whose bag is that?

त्यो तपाईंको झोला हो।
tyo tapāī̃ko jholā ho.
That is your bag.
