Chapter 7 – Existence and Possession

Unit 1 — Key Vocabulary

In this unit, you will learn common Nepali words for talking about existence and possession. You will practise using यहाँ (yahā̃) “here,” त्यहाँ (tyahā̃) “there,” सँग (saṅga) “with / have,” and classifiers such as –वटा (–waṭā) and –जना (–janā) to talk about things and people.

Study the words below first. Read each Nepali word, look at the transliteration, and practise saying it aloud. Use the English meaning to check your understanding.

Use the vocabulary above with these simple sentence patterns.

Nepali Transliteration English
यहाँ कफी छ। yahā̃ kaphī cha. There is coffee here.
त्यहाँ चिया छ। tyahā̃ ciyā cha. There is tea there.
होटलमा वाइ–फाइ छ। hoṭalmā wāiphāi cha. There is Wi-Fi in the hotel.
कोठामा टेलिफोन छ। koṭhāmā ṭeliphon cha. There is a telephone in the room.
रिसेप्सनमा पासवर्ड छ। risepśanmā pāswarḍ cha. The password is at reception.
तपाईंसँग कागज छ? tapāī̃saṅga kāgaj cha? Do you have paper?
कक्षा कोठामा तीन जना विद्यार्थी छन्। kakṣā koṭhāmā tīn janā widyārthī chan. There are three students in the classroom.
यहाँ कति वटा कोठा छन्? yahā̃ kati waṭā koṭhā chan? How many rooms are here?
त्यहाँ कति जना छन्? tyahā̃ kati janā chan? How many people are there?
