Unit 1 — Key Vocabulary

In this unit, you will learn common Nepali words for talking about daily routines. You will practise saying what time you wake up, eat, go to class, travel, study, and sleep.

Study the words below first. Read each Nepali word or phrase, look at the transliteration, and practise saying it aloud. Use the English meaning to check your understanding.

Routine Verbs

These verbs help you talk about everyday actions.

खानु khānu to eat / drink

धुनु dhunu to wash
निस्कनु niskanu to leave / go out
पिउनु piunu to drink
माझ्नु mājhnu to brush / clean
सिक्नु siknu to learn
सुत्नु sutnu to sleep
हिँड्नु hiḍnu to walk
गर्नु garnu to do

Food and Drinks

These words help you talk about breakfast, snacks, meals, and drinks.

कफी kaphī coffee
चिया ciyā tea
जुस jus juice
दही dahī yogurt
दालभात dālbhāt lentils and rice
नास्ता nāstā breakfast

रोटी roṭī bread / flatbread
फलफूल phalphūl fruit

Useful Phrases

Use these short phrases in simple everyday conversation.

सन्चै छ? sancai cha? Are you fine?
सन्चै छ। sancai cha. I’m fine.

Useful Sentence Patterns

Use the vocabulary above with these simple sentence patterns.

Nepali Transliteration English
तपाईं कति बजे उठ्नुहुन्छ? tapāī̃ kati baje uṭhnuhuncha? What time do you wake up?
म साढे छ बजे उठ्छु। ma sāḍhe cha baje uṭhchu. I wake up at 6:30.
म बिहान नास्ता खान्छु। ma bihāna nāstā khānchu. I eat breakfast in the morning.
म चिया पिउँछु। ma ciyā piũchu. I drink tea.
त्यसपछि म क्लास जान्छु। tyaspachi ma klās jānchu. After that, I go to class.
म प्रायः बसमा जान्छु। ma prāyah basmā jānchu. I usually go by bus.
म दिउँसो खाजा खान्छु। ma diũso khājā khānchu. I eat a snack in the afternoon.
म कहिलेकाहीँ बजार जान्छु। ma kahilekāhī̃ bajār jānchu. I sometimes go to the market.
म राति सुत्छु। ma rāti sutchu. I sleep at night.

Example:

What time do you wake up?

म साढे छ बजे उठ्छु।
ma sāḍhe cha baje uṭhchu.
I wake up at 6:30.
