Unit 1 — Key Vocabulary

In this unit, you will learn common Nepali words for talking about time, days, and schedules. You will practise asking what day it is, what time something starts, and how to make or discuss an appointment.

Study the words below first. Read each Nepali word or phrase, look at the transliteration, and practise saying it aloud. Use the English meaning to check your understanding.

Use these phrases to ask about days, times, class schedules, appointments, and phone numbers.

हाम्रो कक्षा कुन दिन हुन्छ? hāmrō kakṣā kun din huncha? What day is our class?
अहिले कति बज्यो? ahile kati bajyo? What time is it now?
कक्षा कति बजे सुरु हुन्छ? kakṣā kati baje suru huncha? What time does class start?
मलाई अपोइन्टमेन्ट चाहिन्छ। malāī apoīnṭmenṭ cāhincha. I need an appointment.
तपाईंलाई कुन दिन चाहिन्छ? tapāī̃lāī kun din cāhincha? What day do you need?
तपाईंको फोन नम्बर के हो? tapāī̃ko phon nambar ke ho? What is your phone number?

Useful Sentence Patterns

Use the vocabulary above with these simple sentence patterns.

Nepali Transliteration English
कक्षा सोमबार हुन्छ। kakṣā sombār huncha. Class is on Monday.
कक्षा बिहान हुन्छ। kakṣā bihāna huncha. Class is in the morning.
कक्षा साढे नौ बजे सुरु हुन्छ। kakṣā sāḍhe nau baje suru huncha. Class starts at 9:30.
अपोइन्टमेन्ट शुक्रबार छ। apoīnṭmenṭ śukrabār cha. The appointment is on Friday.
म आज व्यस्त छु। ma āja byasta chu. I am busy today.
मलाई सोमबार अपोइन्टमेन्ट चाहिन्छ। malāī sombār apoīnṭmenṭ cāhincha. I need an appointment on Monday.
बेलुका सवा सात बजे। belukā sawā sāt baje. Quarter past seven in the evening.
राति पौने दश बजे। rāti paune daś baje. Quarter to ten at night.
