Chapter 5 – Identifying People

Overview

In this chapter, you will learn common Nepali personal pronouns (I, we, you, he/she, they) and how to use them in identity sentences such as “I am John” and “She is Linda.” You will practice present-tense forms of the verb हुनु (hunu) “to be,” including forms that signal politeness and honorific respect. You will also practice asking and answering “Who are you?” and “Who is she/he?” in short, natural exchanges.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • recognize and use common Nepali pronouns
  • select pronouns appropriately based on politeness and context
  • form affirmative identity sentences using present forms of हुनु (hunu)
  • form negative identity sentences using correct negative patterns
  • ask and answer “who” questions for 2nd and 3rd person
