Chapter 12 – Time, Days, and Schedules

Learning in Practice

In this section, you will use time, days, and schedule words in simple real-life situations. You will practise asking when something happens, asking what time something happens, and talking about your daily or weekly schedule.

Try it in real life

Look at your weekly schedule. Choose three activities and say when they happen.

Example:

sombār mero kakṣā cha.
I have class on Monday.

maṅgalbār mero kām cha.
I have work on Tuesday.

budhabār mero baiṭhak cha.
I have a meeting on Wednesday.

āja mero kakṣā cha.
I have class today.

bholi mero kām cha.
I have work tomorrow.

Practice task

Practise this short exchange with a partner:

A: तपाईंको कक्षा कहिले छ?
tapāī̃ko kakṣā kahile cha?

mero kakṣā sombār cha.

A: कति बजे छ?
kati baje cha?

daś baje cha.

bholi tapāī̃ko kām cha?

ho, bholi mero kām cha.

Mini culture note

Time and schedule words are useful in school, work, travel, appointments, and community visits. In Nepal, people may use Nepali time expressions together with English or international time systems, especially in cities, schools, and offices.

For beginners, it is helpful to first learn simple expressions such as आज (āja), भोलि (bholi), कहिले (kahile), and कति बजे (kati baje).

Common mistake

Do not confuse कहिले (kahile) and कति बजे (kati baje).

Use कहिले (kahile) to ask “when?”

tapāī̃ko kakṣā kahile cha?
When is your class?

Use कति बजे (kati baje) to ask “at what time?”

kati baje cha?
What time is it? / At what time is it?

Say it aloud

Practise these slowly. Then say them more naturally.

After you practise, use the audio recorder below to record yourself. Listen to your recording and try again if you want to improve your pronunciation.

आज।
āja.
Today.

bholi.
Tomorrow.

hijo.
Yesterday.

kahile?
When?

kati baje?
At what time?

sombār.
Monday.

maṅgalbār.
Tuesday.

budhabār.
Wednesday.

Rhythm practice

Read this short exchange aloud:

तपाईंको कक्षा कहिले छ?
tapāī̃ko kakṣā kahile cha?

mero kakṣā sombār cha.

kati baje cha?

daś baje cha.

bholi tapāī̃ko kām cha?

ho, bholi mero kām cha.
