Chapter 13 – Daily Routines

Learning in Practice

In this section, you will use daily routine verbs and time expressions in simple real-life situations. You will practise saying what you do every day, when you do it, and how to ask someone about their routine.

Try it in real life

Think about your usual day. Choose five things you do every day and say them in Nepali.

Example:

म बिहान उठ्छु।
ma bihān uṭhchu.
I wake up in the morning.

म खाना खान्छु।
ma khānā khānchu.
I eat food.

म कक्षा जान्छु।
ma kakṣā jānchu.
I go to class.

म काम गर्छु।
ma kām garchu.
I work.

म राति सुत्छु।
ma rāti sutchu.
I sleep at night.

Practice task

Practise this short exchange with a partner:

A: तपाईं बिहान के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ bihān ke garnuhuncha?

B: म बिहान उठ्छु।
ma bihān uṭhchu.

A: तपाईं दिउँसो के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ diũso ke garnuhuncha?

B: म दिउँसो कक्षा जान्छु।
ma diũso kakṣā jānchu.

A: तपाईं राति के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ rāti ke garnuhuncha?

B: म राति सुत्छु।
ma rāti sutchu.

Mini culture note

Daily routines are a common topic in friendly conversation. People may ask about study, work, meals, travel, family responsibilities, or rest. Simple routine sentences help learners talk about everyday life in a natural way.

In Nepali, time expressions such as बिहान (bihān), दिउँसो (diũso), बेलुका (belukā), and राति (rāti) often come before the main action.

Common mistake

Do not use only the verb root as a full sentence.

For example, पढ् (paḍh) is a verb root. It is not a complete sentence by itself.

Better:

म पढ्छु।
ma paḍhchu.
I study / read.

म खाना खान्छु।
ma khānā khānchu.
I eat food.

म कक्षा जान्छु।
ma kakṣā jānchu.
I go to class.

Also notice that respectful questions often use गर्नुहुन्छ (garnuhuncha):

तपाईं के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ ke garnuhuncha?
What do you do?

Say it aloud

Practise these slowly. Then say them more naturally.

After you practise, use the audio recorder below to record yourself. Listen to your recording and try again if you want to improve your pronunciation.

बिहान।
bihān.
Morning.

दिउँसो।
diũso.
Afternoon / daytime.

बेलुका।
belukā.
Evening.

राति।
rāti.
Night.

म उठ्छु।
ma uṭhchu.
I wake up.

म खान्छु।
ma khānchu.
I eat.

म जान्छु।
ma jānchu.
I go.

म सुत्छु।
ma sutchu.
I sleep.

Rhythm practice

Read this short exchange aloud:

तपाईं बिहान के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ bihān ke garnuhuncha?

म बिहान उठ्छु।
ma bihān uṭhchu.

तपाईं दिउँसो के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ diũso ke garnuhuncha?

म दिउँसो कक्षा जान्छु।
ma diũso kakṣā jānchu.

तपाईं राति के गर्नुहुन्छ?
tapāī̃ rāti ke garnuhuncha?

म राति सुत्छु।
ma rāti sutchu.
